Reducing Energy Costs to increase the real estate value of your Carrboro Home |
Carrboro NC can be characterized as a small, historic town consisting mostly of residential areas, but with distinctive retail stores, restaurants and arts activities. Although visitors may be unaware of the precise boundary dividing it from Chapel Hill, throughout its history, Carrboro has maintained its own identity. Among a number of community spirited features, Carrboro has one of the most extensive bikeway systems in the state and, in 2002, earned its 18th consecutive Tree City USA award from the National Arbor Day Foundation for its effort to plant and maintain trees. The history of Carrboro dates to 1882, when a spur from the Durham-Greensboro Southern Railway line was extended to link university students with the outside world. Several significant historic structures in town remain standing today. The Carrboro Historic District includes a former textile mill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was renovated as a charming shopping mall, and the former railroad depot was redeveloped for office and retail space. Both contribute significantly to the vitality of the downtown business district, which serves a population of about 18,000. Vicky Olive of Piedmont Preferred Realty, Inc. is an independent real estate broker serving individuals who value expert representation in their search for a distinctive home and North Carolina lifestyle. Vicky will be pleased to introduce you to the communities around Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Chatham County.

Passive solar systems tips from Deer Mountain near Chapel Hill NCAn isolated gain system has its integral parts separate from the main living area of a house. Examples are a sunroom and a convective loop through an air collector to a storage system in the house. The ability to isolate the system from the primary living areas is the point of distinction for this type of system. (See Figure 3) The isolated gain system will utilize 15 - 30% of the sunlight striking the glazing toward heating the adjoining living areas. Solar energy is also retained in the sunroom itself. Sunrooms (or solar greenhouses) employ a combination of direct gain and indirect gain system features. Sunlight entering the sunroom is retained in the thermal mass and air of the room. Sunlight is brought into the house by means of conduction through a shared mass wall in the rear of the sunroom, or by vents that permit the air between the sunroom and living space to be exchanged by convection. The use of a south facing air collector to naturally convect air into a storage area is a variation on the active solar system air collector. These are passive collectors. Convective air collectors are located lower than the storage area so that the heated air generated in the collector naturally rises into the storage area and is replaced by return air from the lower cooler section of the storage area. Heat can be released from the storage area either by opening vents that access the storage by mechanical means (fans), or by conduction if the storage is built into the house. Green Home Air Quality Tips from Deer Mountain Pittsboro near Chapel Hill NCWhen building your home, be aware of carpet and paint types, as they will affect the home’s air quality. Natural fiber carpets are best, but if at all possible it is preferable that other flooring (such as wood or bamboo) is chosen. Painting with low-toxic paints will reduce the amount of toxins in the air, which will improve the overall quality of the home. Be sure to have a good ventilation system as well, since this will keep outdoor pollutants from entering the home and will keep indoor air quality at a high level Thursday, September 18, 2008
